Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right PVV party, has won the legislative elections in the Netherlands. According to exit polls, the PVV is expected to have 37 seats, an increase of 18 compared to the current Assembly.
The left-wing GL-PvdA bloc has become the second largest party with 25 seats, while the VVD, the largest party in the previous elections, has suffered a significant setback with only 24 seats.
A new party, the « New Social Contract » of the center-right, is expected to win 20 seats.
Traditionally, the largest party is given the opportunity to form a governmental coalition, but it remains to be seen if Geert Wilders will be able to find coalition partners.
The election results will be closely examined in Brussels, as Wilders has often advocated for a Nexit and a return to the florin.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reacted by congratulating Wilders and stating that « the winds of change are here. »
In France, Marine Le Pen of the National Rally also congratulated Wilders for his « spectacular performance » in the legislative elections.
